The schedule for the month of February, 2019 was 1 Monthly F.C. EmComm Meeting, 4 Monday Night Nets, 1 New Ham Workshop, and 1 EmComm & Coffee.
New Ham Workshop
Sunday February 10th several of us helped with a New Ham Workshop. Greg (KJ6OUI) organized a workshop through the 4 wheel drive clubs to help them understand what communications were available to them, both licensed and unlicensed. This workshop showed them the difference between the different radio services, what their strong points and their weakness are.
Brian (K6OGR) put together a power point for the event that covered most all to the information needed to make a decision on which radio and service one might need. He covered most all of the handheld and mobile radios that are available as well some of the available accessories. Chris (KJ6OUG) gave commentary and helped answer questions asked by the attendees.
Greg received some great raffle prizes from sponsors of the event. I would say all of those who attended received some sort of prize. Greg mentioned we should try to have this workshop at least annually, maybe twice a year.
ARES Traffic Practice
Fresno ARES/RACES is conducting an on-the-air Traffic Handling practice after our regular Monday night EmComm Nets. Brian has been sending a message using the ARRL Message Form. After the practice the copied message was emailed to Brian to check accuracy and log your time on ARES Connect.
The practice will continue after the nets so join us and have some fun.
ARES Training During Net Feb.18
During our Monday night net there will be ARES Training. The exercise will be to test our simplex capabilities. There will be a simulated repeater failure requiring all operators to go to simplex. Use your time before the net to test your equipment and get it set up to quickly switch.
We are now posting events and meetings on the calendar as well as posting articles on the home page. There is a lot of new information and links added to the site as well thanks to our Webmaster Brian (K6OGR). Check us out at fcemcomm.org

ARES Connect SJV & Up Coming Training
This is a gentle reminder that ARES Connect is live as of 1 January 2019. This system will be used to track all volunteer hours for ARES training and events and the only way the ARRL knows about member involvement. Registration is easy and takes about five minutes. Please visit https://arrl.volunteerhub.com/lp/sjv/ to get set up. There are training video links on the https://fcemcomm.org web site on the side menu under "ARES Connect" and then "Training". If you get truly stuck send me an e-mail and I will try and get you pointed in the right direction.
Things that will be counted for hours include, but are not limited to, weekly FC EmComm nets, monthly ARES training, EmComm and coffee, and community service events. We will use the aforementioned events as MAC level certification for ARES. Therefore, if we do not have a record of your hours we cannot verify MAC level.
Additionally, if you've read this far, we will be conducting an on the air exercise 18 February 2019. It will be a simulated repeater outage requiring all members to use 147.150 simplex. Please have your equipment ready so you can transmit and receive. If you want to test give me a holler on the repeater and I can switch to simplex (night time is best). I will use the standard radiogram format, but body only (for now). An example can be found here: http://www.arrl.org/files/media/Group/Fillable%20Radiogram%20Form.pdf.
Please let me know if you have questions regarding ARES Connect, the exercise in February, or the message receiving practice. //K6OGR – Brian
