EC Report for September 2018

Hello,

The schedule for the month of September 2018: 4 Monday Night Nets, 1 EmComm Meeting, and 1 EmComm & Coffee and 1 Public Service event.

 Tour de Fresno

I would like to thank all that took part with the communications for the Tour de Fresno Bike Ride held Sept. 15. From what I have gathered from listening to parts of the event Saturday all seem to go rather smoothly. I didn’t get to participate this time for I was out of state for a week.

Please remember that these events are important training events for us. They give us the practice that we need working in a net scenario and about the closest we can get to emergency traffic handling without declared disaster. We have two events in October and we are still looking for help. Please refer to the Public Service Calendar and consider participating

 EmComm and Training Meetings

I would like to remind you all that the EmComm Meetings are important to all members. Not only are the meeting used to disperse information pertinent to our organization but they are a venue for training.

Chris Johnson (KJ6OUG) is teaching the curriculum for our MAC Training at the meetings. This training will give us the ability to rank our members as to their knowledge of our craft as well as you experience. With the ARRL revamping of the ARES program this will be imperative to our complying with their new requirements. Chris will post the classes on the website in the near future, but it is a lot easier to attend a meeting and take the class.

ARRL Headquarters Emergency Response Team Activates for Florence

The ARRL Headquarters Emergency Response Team activated on September 12, as what the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is calling "dangerous Hurricane Florence" continued to close in on the southeastern US coast, where it's "expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and rainfall to portions of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic states."

"Watch out, America. Hurricane Florence is so enormous, we could only capture her with a super wide-angle lens from the Space Station, 400 kilometers directly above the eye," Astronaut Alexander Gerst, KF5ONO, tweeted. "Get prepared on the East Coast. This is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you!"

ARRL shipped seven Ham Aid kits to South Carolina by way of Georgia on September 11 to assist with emergency preparedness needs in advance of Hurricane Florence. These kits are the same ones that ARRL volunteers took to Puerto Rico a year ago to assist with disaster communications following Hurricane Maria. ARRL is staging HF and VHF/UHF equipment in the Maryland/Virginia area for deployment locally or farther down the coast.

"South Carolina ARES is fully activated," ARRL South Carolina Section Emergency Coordinator Billy Irwin, K9OH, told ARRL, adding that he's been coordinating regularly with the state Emergency Management Division. "We have operators serving 12-hour shifts at the SC Emergency Management Division and will move to 24-hour coverage on Thursday. Two operators have been deployed to Berkeley County to assist with shelter operations at the request of the Emergency Coordinator there." Irwin said information about frequencies in use is in the Tactical Guide on the South Carolina ARES website.

ANNOUNCEMENTUPCOMING EMCOMM (CARP)

2018 Public Service EVENTS

October 06, 2018 – Grizzly Century Ride

October 13, 2018 – Bass Lake Double Century Bicycle Ride

If you would like to volunteer to work one or more of these events please go to k6arp.org and signup. You can also email Rob Mavis at (AE6GE@ae6ge.com).

Remember that we use these public service events as training venues. We recommend that you participate in at least three events a year. Soon this will be mandatory for you to keep your ability to be deployed during a disaster. Remember that we want to have qualifications and operational levels for our operators. This will help when we are asked to perform mutual aid for other County ARES/RACES Groups. When they ask for help, they want our people qualified.

 EmComm Website

We are now posting events and meetings on the calendar as well as posting articles on the home page. There is a lot of new information and links added to the site as well thanks to our Webmaster Brian (K6OGR)

 Check us out at fcemcomm.org.

 Net Control Staff Needed

We are looking for volunteers to take a turn as net control on Monday nights. This is not a difficult task. We will provide the preamble and net roster. This is a great way to enhance your skills running a net for emergency situations. If you are interested, please contact Gary (KI6OYW) at 559-269-1340 or email g_greenberg@att.net
