EC Report for October 2018

Hello,

The schedule for the month of October 2018: 4 Monday Night Nets, 1 EmComm Meeting, and 1 EmComm & Coffee and 2 Public Service events.

North Fork Grizzly Ride

I would like to thank all that took part with the communications for the North Fork Grizzly Ride held Oct. 06. This ride stated at a school in North Fork and covered 100 miles. There were no major problems for the riders and all communications went well.

Please remember that these events are important training events for us. They give us the practice that we need working in a net scenario and about the closest we can get to emergency traffic handling without declared disaster.

Bass Lake Double Ride

The Bass Lake Double is a long event for our communicators, the ride started around 04:30 and the net closed a little after midnight. Some of our people had long shifts and others, like net, control had relief operators. Some net controls worked 8 to 10 hour shifts.

There were no major problems or injuries on the ride. Although one rider slid on some gravel and went for a swim in Bass Lake. His only injury was his pride. He finished the ride in good time.

One new thing was the use of electronic checking of riders. They had two or three sensors set up to monitor the rider’s locations. The staff at two rest stops took the number manually to have some way to check the reliability of the new system.

EmComm and Training Meetings

We will have a guest speaker at out next EmComm Meeting. Grady Williams (K6IXA) will be talking about Winlink on VHF/UHF. He will also be talking about Diawolf software; this uses your computer to take the place of a TNC for packet.

I would like to remind you all that the EmComm Meetings are important to all members. Not only are the meeting used to disperse information pertinent to our organization but they are a venue for training.

ARES Connect San Joaquin Valley! Please view and sign up for available opportunities below. When you volunteer with ARRL, you help: educate the public about the Amateur Radio Service, welcome newcomers, encourage self-training and skill advancement and bolster a nationwide emergency communications network. The new ARES Connect volunteer management system provides many valuable features that will truly enhance the experience of emergency communication volunteers. Those features include: a robust event management feature that allows you to create events, register users, log hours; a more automated reporting system based on user input, so that, instead of filing reports, you will be able to generate reports based on the events users register and log hours for; enhanced roster management capabilities; and embedded communications tools that will allow you to send email and text messages to volunteers. Information for registering as an ARES Member will be coming in the near future. This is an exciting new tool for all of us. Please consider registering for in the near future it will be the only way to report our training and public service hours to the national. You can go to our website and find the link and sign up. When you do please remember to use your call sigh as USER NAME. Announcement, Upcoming Emcomm Service Event Two Cities Marathon will be November 04, 2018. Yes this is on a Sunday. Dan Pruitt is doing the communications for this event. WE are helping the medical staff observing the course for medical problems with the runners. If you are interested in helping, please contact Dan Pruitt (AE6SX) at ae6sx@arrl.org or call 559-776-2974. Remember that we use these public service events as training venues. We recommend that you participate in at least three events a year. Soon this will be mandatory for you to keep your ability to be deployed during a disaster. Remember that we want to have qualifications and operational levels for our operators. This will help when we are asked to perform mutual aid for other County ARES/RACES Groups. When they ask for help, they want our people qualified.
