EC Report for December 2016
The schedule for the month of December was a little more active: 4 Monday Night EmComm Nets and 1 EmComm and Coffee, one EmComm Monthly Meeting and one public service event.
New Training Meeting Location
Hinds Hospice has gracefully offered their building for out training meetings. We have been looking for an alternate location due to the Fresno Salvation Army Citadel cutting back on the use of its facilities. James Majors (K6JDM), one of our members and also on staff at Hinds Hospice, has offered the use of its facility on West Shaw Ave. in Fresno.
On December 5th Gary (KI6OYW), Richard (KE6SHL) and myself were invited to go on a walkthrough of the Hinds Hospice facilities. We found the space more than adequate; it is a freshly remodeled building with great lighting and AC too. There are tables, chairs and a projector available for training purposes.
We will start using the facility after the holidays. These training sessions are for new as well as the seasoned members. We will try to help with any concerns that you have with amateur radio or emergency communications. Please let us know what topics you would like to see addressed.
The Salvation Army Toy & Food Distribution
As most of you know SATERN is a portion of our EmComm Group, and for the last ten years or so our SATERN Group has managed crowd control at the Salvation Army’s Toy and Food Distribution for Christmas. This year was no different. December 21st the SATERN Group descended on the Fresno County Fair Grounds with hand-held radios in hand. We had operators assisting The Salvation Army staff by keeping them informed on the lines of clients and the food distribution. We had hams at all of the entrances and exits directing clients to their correct positions in line according to their prearranged appointment times. All seemed to flow smoothly and there were no major hang-ups.
2016 Is Coming To An End
I would like to thank all of you for participating in the ARES/RACES activities this year. I think it has been a good year and we should be happy with what we have accomplished. I think we will surpass this next year if we all put in a little more effort. I know we will be working with Hinds Hospice this coming year taking part in their emergency plan.
We also work with the DM/HRC (Disaster Medical Health Response Committee) this is the emergency medical group of hospitals in Fresno, Madera, Kings and Tulare Counties. There is also a representative from NAS Lemoore. We have been part of this group for about 30 years and we are part of their emergency plan. We meet with them every other month so they know our capabilities. We sometimes work with them with their Emergency Drills. I am looking forward to doing more with them.
I would appreciate it if you would please send me any ideas for training or activities that we can use in the coming year. I know that Chris (KJ6OUG) would like to hear your ideas as well as I. Remember this is your organization not just the officers.
Public Service And Its Importance
As most of you have observed I really push the use of Public Service Events as training venues. There is a method for my madness. As an ARES EC and RACES Officer I need to know your proficiency as an operator. When ARES or RACES gets a request for assistance from a served agency, they want to know what our staff is capable of and what training they have completed. We have a database with the training courses where you have received a certificate (that is if you have summited them), but as of now, nothing showing your abilities as an operator. We are starting to log your participation with public service events as well as handling the Monday Night EmComm Nets.
Please consider helping with the Monday Night Nets or volunteer for some of the Public Service Events.
Public Service Calendar
- February 18, 2017 = Rotary Chocolate Run
If you are interested in the biking events please either go to the CARP website or contact me.
We are now posting events and meetings on the calendar as well as posting articles on the home page. Check us out at fcemcomm.org.
Net Control Staff Needed
We are looking for volunteers to take a turn as net control on Monday nights. This is not a difficult task. We will provide the preamble and net roster. This is a great way to enhance your skills running a net for emergency situations. If you are interested, please contact Gary (KI6OYW) at 559-269-1340 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Don’t forget the Monday Night EmComm Net at 19:30 hr. on the 147.15 MHz Pl 141.3. We have some good information and camaraderie. On the third Friday of the month there is the EmComm & Coffee at YFC on Cedar south of Ashlan in Granite Park at 07:00hr. And last but not least the EmComm Meetings are held on the Fourth Thursday of month. Our next meeting will be January 26, 2017 at 1900 hr. at the Salvation Army Citadel at 1854 Fulton St., Fresno.
