ARES/RACES EC’s Report Nov. 2015

EMCOMM Letterhead (1)

EC Report for November 2015

Hi All,

This month’s schedule was a rather relaxing one: 4 Monday Night EmComm Nets, 1 EmComm and Coffee, and 1 Digital Workshop.

Radio Workshop.   The last workshop we had our regular 6 members show up. We set up our computers and radios on dummy loads so we could practice our craft sitting around the dining room at the Citadel. One good thing that came out of the workshop—Dan (AE6SX), after three workshops, found his problem with his portable unit using a hand held radio. He found he was using a stereo adapter going into radio not the monaural one needed. He now has small portable digital station that utilizes a handheld radio, tablet computer and SignaLink.

We will not have a workshop until after the holidays.

EmComm Website   We are now posting events and meetings on the calendar as well as posting articles on the home page. Check us out at

Public Service Calendar 2015   Most of you know we help CARP doing Public Service events. We use them for training; they help keep us sharp handling traffic and working under a net condition. I am including the calendar of events as it is now.

2015 Public Service Events:

  • December 18 – The Salvation Army Toy and Food Distribution

  • February 20 – The Rotary Chocolate Run
  • March 5 – Blossom Trail 10K

If interested in volunteering at any of the above events, contact either Rob Mavis
( or Dan Pruitt (

Army MARS CommEx (Not so good)  Army MARS conducted a Communications Exercise from November 07 to November 08. The Exercise simulated a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and Geo-Magnetic Storm. Amateur Radio was to be integrated into the scenario. MARS personnel checked into Ham nets, both HF and VHF/UHF to collect information that was requested. Fresno County ARES was to be a part of the exercise, anticipating the MARS contact coming up on the net and collecting their information but sorry to say no one showed. Hopefully thing will work out better on the next exercise.

Newbee Net or IntroNet  Lew Roberts (KI6YWX) will be starting a new net in January; it is designed for the new Ham. He will call it The IntroNet. He and at least two others will be there to answer questions and give advice to the new Ham as well as some of us more seasoned ones that are having problems. He will try to answer your questions at the time asked, but if he isn’t able he will research and get back to you.

Lew has mentioned that the net will most likely be held on Tuesday evenings. The time is still to be determined. This net should be a great help to our newest amateurs.

Build Project   “Easy Digi Kit” interface project that Lew Roberts (KI6YWX) has suggested. We need 10 people to get the discount on the materials and as of now we have 3. This would be a great way to get stated in the digital modes. The cost is low and it is great fun to get together and build a project. The basic kit cost $20 and the deluxe version with all the cables PTT interface and programmable RJ-45 output runs $30. This beats the $100 plus for a commercial one. I am sending a flyer that Lew handed out at the last meeting, check it out.

Net Control Staff Needed

We are looking for volunteers to take a turn as net control on Monday nights. This is not a difficult task. We will provide the preamble and net roster. This is a great way to enhance your skills running a net for emergency situations. If you are interested, please contact Gary (KI6OYW) at 559-269-1340 or email

Our Calendar

Don’t forget the Monday Night EmComm Net at 1930 hr. on the 147.15 MHz Pl 141.3. We have some good information and camaraderie. Due to the holiday the EmComm & Coffee will be moved to December 11th ,  still at YFC on Cedar south of Ashlan in Granite Park at 07:00hr. And last but not least the EmComm Meetings are held on the Fourth Thursday of month. There is an exception for November and December due to the holidays. Our next meeting will be December 10th at 19:00 hr. at the Salvation Army Citadel at 1854 Fulton St., Fresno.
