EC Report for September 2015
This month’s schedule was fairly active: 4 Monday Night EmComm Nets, 1 EmComm and Coffee, 1 ARES/RACES meeting, and 1 Digital Workshop, a public service event, and the Rally in The Valley.
We wish to expand the workshop to benefit anyone interested in Amateur Radio and its challenges. We would like to aid some of the newer members with setting up and maintaining their stations. Many of the new people have questions about how to choose an antenna or radio that will cover their needs. These are some of the inquiries we will address. Our mission is to assist new and experienced operators to become better at their craft and have fun.
The last workshop was very poorly attended; we had only four people show up. We are holding these workshops to help both members and nonmembers alike. If you are having problems or have questions about amateur radio operations, technical problems or just want to bounce some ideas off someone please come and participate.
Our next workshop will take place October 6 at 18:30 at the Salvation Army Citadel. We will be concentrating on the digital modes we will be using for the Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century Bike Ride where we will be sending traffic from two rest stops back to Central Control in Fresno on the following Saturday.
Rally In The Valley Report
The Rally in the Valley was a success again this year. Attendance was up a little from last year and we had attendees from as far away as Manteca and Hanford. There were several good seminars and an all-day fox hunt. There were several great prizes given away including a YEASU FT-7900 2 meter Radio. All and all everyone seemed to have a good time. Dan Pruitt is already starting to plan for next year’s event.
EmComm Website Up And Running
This last month our new EmComm website was launched. It is up and functioning but still a work in progress. As our webmaster Rob Mavis (AE6GE) and our editors, Chris Johnson (KJ6OUG), Greg Waters (KJ6OUI) and Glen Blomgren (AF6CY) have said this is a marathon not a sprint. We are taking our time and expanding the site as we go. We are posting events and meetings on the calendar as well as posting articles on the home page. There are several links to different club websites as well are other Amateur Radio interests. Check us out at fcemcomm.org.
New Ham “The Intro-net”
Lew Roberts (KI6YWX) has come up with a great idea. He and others will start up a New Ham net soon and has decided name it “The Intro-net”. This is going to be designed to assist the new Hams, hoping to make them feel more comfortable asking questions compared to checking into a net that is leaning toward the more senior hams. Lew will be net control and will have at least two experienced Hams helping answer questions. Also if you are a Ham that is just trying something new and have questions you are also welcome. The days and times are still being worked out so we will have more information after the wrinkles have been ironed out.
Public Service Calendar 2015
Most of you know we help CARP doing Public Service events. We use them for training; they help keep us sharp handling traffic and working under a net condition. I am including the calendar of events as it is now.
2015 Public Service Events:
- October 10 – Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century
- November 8 – Two Cities Marathon
- December 18 – The Salvation Army Toy and Food Distribution
If interested in volunteering at any of the above events, contact either Rob Mavis or me.
Net Control Staff Needed
We are looking for volunteers to take a turn as net control on Monday nights. This is not a difficult task. We will provide the preamble and net roster. This is a great way to enhance your skills running a net for emergency situations. If you are interested, please contact Gary (KI6OYW) at 559-269-1340 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Don’t forget the Monday Night EmComm Net at 1930 hr. on the 147.15 MHz Pl 141.3. We have some good information and camaraderie. On the third Friday of the month there is the EmComm Coffee at YFC on Cedar south of Ashlan in Granite Park at 07:00hr. And last but not least the EmComm Meetings are held on the Fourth Thursday of month. The October meeting will be held October 22th at 1900 hr. at the Salvation Army Citadel at 1854 Fulton St., Fresno.
