This month’s schedule was fairly slow: 4 Monday Night EmComm Nets, 1 EmComm and Coffee, 1 ARES/RACES meeting, and 1 Digital Workshop.
We wish to expand the workshop to benefit anyone interested in Amateur Radio and its challenges. We would like to aid some of the newer members with setting up and maintaining their stations. Many of the new people have questions about how to choose an antenna or radio that will cover their needs. These are some of the inquiries we will address. Our mission is to assist new and experienced operators to become better at their craft and have fun.
Our next workshop will take place September 15 at 18:30 at the Salvation Army Citadel. We will be concentrating on the digital modes we will be using for the Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century Bike Ride where we will be sending traffic from two rest stops back to Central Control in Fresno.
At the workshop we will also respond to any radio concerns you may have. This should be a fun and interesting event.

Rough Fire and Hume Lake
The Rough Fire was started on the July 31 by lightning. As of time I am writing the fire is at 66,542 acers and 25% contained.
August 22 Dan Pruitt (AE6SX) was scanning two meters and heard someone calling CQ on the 146.88 repeater in Tulare. Dan went back to the call and it turned out to be KG6AIS, Stanton Whiting, he is the Director of Operation at Hume Lake Christian Camps. At that point the camp was in the direct line of the fires path. Stanton was looking for alternate ways to communicate in the event that regular lines were cut. He had a fixed station as well as HT and could make the 146.88 machine form his location. He asked Dan if he could find some folks to monitor the repeater until the danger passed. Dan contacted Ray Quinn (W6RAY), Eric Ott (N6VYT) and Kevin Enquist (KC6IED) in the Tulare area and they took care of the monitoring. Thankfully normal communications stayed on line and the camp was also spared. All of our prayers were answered.
Public Service Calendar 2015
Most of you know we help CARP doing Public Service events. We use them for training; they help keep us sharp handling traffic and working under a net condition. I am including the calendar of events as it is now.
2015 Public Service Events:
- September 12 – Tour de Fresno Charity Bicycle Century
- October 10 – Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century
- November 8 – Two Cities Marathon
If interested in volunteering at any of the above events, contact either Rob Mavis or me.
Net Control Staff Needed
We are looking for volunteers to take a turn as net control on Monday nights. This is not a difficult task. We will provide the preamble and net roster. This is a great way to enhance your skills running a net for emergency situations. If you are interested, please contact Gary (KI6OYW) at 559-269-1340 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Don’t forget the Monday Night EmComm Net at 1930 hr. on the 147.15 MHz Pl 141.3. We have some good information and camaraderie. On the third Friday of the month there is the EmComm Coffee at YFC on Cedar south of Ashlan in Granite Park at 07:00hr. And last but not least the EmComm Meetings are held on the Fourth Thursday of month. The September meeting will be held September 24th at 1900 hr. at the Salvation Army Citadel at 1854 Fulton St., Fresno.
